I don't see myself being with him for the rest of my life

gg1993,

Generally, people never change because someone else asks them to change. That includes lovers/significant others. The person who needs to change actually has to want to change for his or herself. In this scenario, it sounds like he just told you what you wanted to hear so that he wouldn't have to deal with the fallout. Of course, since he did not actually want to change, you are (and he is) having to deal with the consequences of it.

If his harassment and alcohol addiction is something you don't want to deal with for the rest of your life, then you should absolutely leave him and find someone more suited to what you desire. Keep in mind that "promises to change" are often meaningless; instead of finding a man who promises to change in the future, find one that doesn't need to change at all.

Hope this helps!
