Say if you see a chick that catches your eye but are unsure if she is okay to approach, i.e. not underage and not ugly, how do you go about it?

If I see a chick on the other side of the street and make the commitment to run all the way up to her and stop her then ask her for directions if she turns out to be 15 or ugly, that's gonna be a bit weird isn't it?

If you always go indirect in this circumstance, you are in control as to where you want to frame before a premise has been set. For instance, I you ask a girl for directions as your opener and they turn out to ugly or underage, you can always leave as if that were the only reason for your interaction.

Ah yes...."She looked good from afar, but was far from good...."

Try waving if it is not too crowded. If she waves back, approach and go direct. What better IOI do you need? But indirect seems to be easier.

One time I pretended to be looking for a lost pair of sunglasses on a grassy amphitheater just to get over and talk to a hot looking chick who was talking with friends. That worked out very well....
